Systematic Theology?

Can anyone tell me what systematic Theology is and where it originated (first people to do it, what part of the world and when in rough terms of about a decade or so in some century)? I'm taking an online video course from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland right now, it's on the history and significance of the book of Kells, and the teacher had a degree in "Systematic Theology", whatever that is.

Wow, that really rules. You get so much more depth and breadth with all that than just the "lucky sevens" of liberal arts and muses.
