Gods = more than one God. That sounds like polytheism.

Shema, the Lord my God is one God. That sounds like monotheism.

Elohim is a Hebrew word that is always plural in form but may be either plural or singular in meaning.

Elohim, plural in form, plural in meaning -> gods, goddesses

Elohim, plural in form, singular in meaning -> God, god, goddess

The gods of Israel were idols.

There is no God besides the God (Heb. elohim, plural in form, singular in meaning) of Israel.
