That is true. But, get enough of them on a machine and they can really slow you down, even shut down your machine.
As well you don't want them tracking you.

Cookies should not be a problem, they are there mainly to hold user customisation data for a specific website; so that when you visit a site you do not have to customise it each time. However something different is 'Spyware' (or 'Adware'), and this can slow your computer down as well as do nasty things. Any good Anti Virus program should be capable of removing these things.
