Yea, it is confusing.
To say one must have ongoing good works is adding to the Bible. Indeed the Bible says one will have good works.
But it also says while sanctification is an ongoing process we will, at times, fail and stumble along the way. It even says some will backslide so much their lives will be taken to preserve their spirits in salvation.
Salvation is a once and for all occurrence. Sanctification is a life long event.
It causes a lot of conflict and confusion. Some demand works for salvation, which is completely rejected in the Bible and will land them in the Lake.
Some claim one can be saved and then be unsaved. Also rejected by the Bible.
Some will receive no rewards for good works in Eternity. Some will be rich in rewards.
Many are confused on the statement believing in Christ saves. The actual meaning of the words in the Greek is to believe, submit and follow, not simply believe.
After all, even Satan, fallen angels and demons believe in Christ without submitting to him.
Unfortunately, many are confused and think they are saved when they are actually following cults. As with the RCC there are many followers of the Pope and priests who are extremely devout to them, Mary and their version of Christ. But they are not saved.
Bottom line is both extremes are wrong. The meanings are as simple as they can be, but living them is complex and hard. Yet, these people try to reduce them to ironclad doctrines.
